It doesn’t mean a real mouse even a kind of potato at all.

You know “couch potato”, right?

It means someone who watches TV programs and eats much on the couch all day so that his/her weight shows an increase, in other words, he/she  becomes fat, looks like a piece of potato on the couch.

What mouse potato means like that. Someone who sits in front of computer and uses his/her mouse to view much information or play on-line games all day lacking of exercise so that his/her body becomes fat, looks like a piece of potato, but relies on mouse, we call it “mouse potato”.
